Description |
Traditionally, pepper berries are separated by placing the harvested pepper in a gunny or polypropylene bag and treading by foot.
It is a labour incentive and unhygienic method which leads to large amount of wastage as well as to produce low quality products. 60kg of pepper can be separated by a worker within one hour. Released juices get into contact with the skin and make irritation to the skin. All these drawbacks lead to high processing cost, reducing quality of final product with customer dissatisfaction. The agricultural machinery available for pepper industry has been developed only considering the large scale cultivation. These technologies require higher investments. Therefore many small scale pepper farmers cannot afford these technologies. Therefore farmers use traditional methods for separation of pepper.
